According to The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) someone is an aggressive driver when that person is speeding, tailgating, unsafely changing lanes, running red lights, failing to obey traffic signals, passing in a no-passing zone, not yielding to other drivers or driving erratically. That kind of aggressive driving results in over 25,000 crashes in which someone is fatally injured each year. Aggressive driving also results in tens of thousands of non-fatal accidents, ones in which someone is seriously injured.
The most frequent type of aggressive driving resulting in deadly car accidents involved a speeding driver. Pursuant to the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA) report, almost 1/3rd of all fatal roadway accidents involve a speeding driver. The GHSA report showed over 10,000 people died in a speed related crash last year. As further evidence of the danger of speeding drivers, the National Safety Council found that crashes involving a speeding driver also cause over $40 billion dollars a year in damages. Speeding is so dangerous because it limits the amount of time a driver has to react to a danger, and it increases the severity of a crash. Despite the known dangers of speeding motorists, incredibly the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) found that states have consistently disregarded public safety and have actually raised speed limits over the last 20 years. Those legislatively altered speed limits are the cause of an additional forty thousand lost lives. Florida with its maximum speed limit of 75 m.p.h. on highways, has resulted in nearly 2000 lost lives annually.
Strangely, one of the most mentioned causes of speeding and aggressive driving is actually congestion. The NHTSA found that motorists often result to traffic congestion by trying to pass other vehicles by speeding, frequently changing lanes and becoming upset with another driver. In those situations, aggressive driving sometimes leads to even more dangerous behavior, road rage. Road rage is when someone is actually physically assaulted because of a traffic incident. The NHTSA also believes that aggressive driving is also caused because there are more drivers on the same roads, affording greater opportunities for bad outcomes. Other times aggressive driving happens when someone doesn’t properly plan for where they are going and feel forced to speed and driver aggressively because they are late for work or school.
